Eclecticism is in the era of the shuffle, where all music exist simultaneously in a sort of perpetual online "now." Yet, Gang Gang Dance in New York are more heroic order Pies.
Started a decade ago as a sort of audio art in fertile New York scene project, Gang Gang Dance have now released five albums of more user-friendly music inspired by vintage synths, ritual incantation, world music, dance culture and the aggressive ethereality of groups such as My Bloody Valentine. Their 2008 album, Saint Dymphna, a Tinchy Stryder pre-fame features and sparked much critical heat, charting in many end of year lists. Hot Chip and horns aligned to rent their ("the foot Pipers of Land ever ce ce swooned Simon Taylor-Davis of the latter). Florence Welch liked their so much she pays extensive tribute to their "House Jam" on his track "rabbit heart (Raise Up)" and was forced to pay royalties.
Ecstatic fifth album Gang Gang Dance, eye Contact, is a work still more lush and spangled that fits snugly with their new label, 4AD, once is home it likes of Cocteau Twins, whose dreamlands evidentialites Gang Gang Dance evoke so far. Eye contact can be this enigmatic more dancing outfit and blissed out to date, but it was ostensibly opens with an 11-minute epic called "Glass Jar", whose smoke-filled amniotic spacey resolves finally in a jam inspired. A track, a warm sample end uncle of singer Lizzie Bougatsos singing in Greek, is a minute long and called "∞". Other breaks are called "∞∞" and "∞∞∞" - the kind of behaviour that could be expected of a suit that were sufficiently refined took part in the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial 2008.
This kind of contention can easily grid. But Gang Gang Dance are in the soul, something of a band of party with a one mile in width squelchy stripe. "Novels Layers", for example, slides as a 70s soul offcut; Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip provides the distorted voice, like a wobbly sigh. Indian and Chinese pop are brilliant reference points and sweet, stressing happy bent of this band.
Indeed, that on the runway thumping key "mindkilla", Gang Gang Dance may appear as Basement Jaxx, combining deranged antics of world-pop dancefloor with rocking Bougatsos creepy song, which at the same time reminds of Kate Bush, Bjork, MIA and Karin Dreijer Andersson of the knife. The video visually stop comes courtesy of one of the Boredoms, Japanese pioneers of tribal avant-pop this decade.
Less masterful hands, all these source materials could combine to create a cacophony of pure form. But eye Contact is a pow - wow are internationalist which works, laced together by the sounds of vintage synths, sparkles jazzy and hedonistic polyrhythm. There are everywhere in the world of poisoned beauty of a small threat - not least on the package. It has an insect threatening aspect, bejewelled of water droplets, straddling a flower.
